Talisman (符箓)
A Talisman is a piece of paper with a technique written into it. It stores power for later, burns when used, and lets a weak cultivator threaten a strong one once. The compound is wider than the paper.

What a Talisman is
The object is a slip of paper carrying an inscribed pattern that holds a technique: fire, lightning, a shield, a teleport. The power releases on activation and the paper is consumed. In the fiction the pattern is the effect.
The second half is 箓, a register of divine names licensing the holder to command the powers listed there. It was an ordination document, not a paper charm, received the way a graduate receives a certificate.
Making a charm takes paper, brush and cinnabar, and the quality of each sets the ceiling of what it holds. The genre uses the materials as an economic track parallel to pills. The paper carries the command, the register supplies the authority.
Why the genre has a consumable power track
Talisman is the standard translation, and some versions use charm or fu. English talisman promises protection, while 符 is a token of authorisation. The borrowing keeps the object and loses the bureaucracy.
It is not the same as a pill, which is consumed and changes the body. A talisman is consumed and releases an effect, and the genre keeps the two apart because they answer different moments. One changes who fights, the other adds a move.
The term is easy to confuse with a talisman treasure, a reusable object of the same family. One burns and the other does not, and the difference is the whole economics. A treasure is capital, a charm is ammunition.
How it is used in a fight
It is how the weak threaten the strong. A protagonist with one high-grade talisman can threaten an opponent who would otherwise win, and the single use is the tension: the reader knows it is finite.
It is the escape plan. Teleport talismans are the standard insurance, and a character who has not bought one is being set up to be cornered. The genre keeps the price visible.
It is the economy of the poor cultivator. Making charms is a trade that does not require a high realm, and the genre uses it to give a low-level character income and danger at once. Both come from cheap paper.

What readers confuse it with
- Formation
- The related discipline, sharing the inscribed-pattern principle. A talisman is a portable formation in one reading, and the two arts overlap.
- Talisman Paper 符纸
- The material, and one of the three constraints on what a talisman can hold. The grade of the paper sets the grade of the charm.
- Medicinal Pill
- The other great consumable, and the one that changes the body rather than releasing an effect. Both are bought and finite, and they differ in whether the body remembers.
Common questions
Can a talisman be reused?
No. It releases and burns, which is what makes the economy work. Reusable versions exist, but the genre keeps them among treasures.
Do you need to be a cultivator to use one?
Usually not, which is the whole point. A mortal with one can produce a cultivator's effect once, and the genre uses that asymmetry constantly. The paper supplies the power, not the holder.
How is a talisman made?
By inscribing a pattern on prepared paper with a brush charged with qi and cinnabar. The materials set the ceiling and the hand decides whether it is reached. A botched stroke is a dud.
What is the difference between a talisman and a formation?
Portability and duration. A formation is fixed to a place; a talisman is carried and releases once. The same pattern principle produces both.
