Formation (阵法)

Formations and Talismans · section 02

A formation is a permanent or semi-permanent arrangement of inscribed objects that combines their qi into a single effect larger than the sum. It is the genre's answer to the problem of defending a place with a limited number of people.

What a formation is and is not

Structurally there are always three parts: nodes that hold power, lines that carry it, and one central node that decides what the power does. That central node is the array eye, and everything about formation combat reduces to finding it.

The effect can be almost anything. This is why the vocabulary is large. A killing array projects force. An illusion array misdirects senses. A trapping array restricts movement. Real sect defences stack several, so that breaking one exposes the next rather than ending the problem.

The economics matter as much as the mechanism. Building a large formation takes decades and a great deal of material. That is why sects guard them the way they guard their elders. It is fixed capital, and destroying one hurts more than killing a mid-tier disciple.

Why the translation is split between formation and array

The character is the same word as the one for setting out or displaying. Its oldest written form shows a banner and a chariot on raised ground, a battle order, and dictionaries list the military sense first. Whether it descends from the display or the deployment is disputed. The inscribed-stone sense is modern.

English translation splits between formation and array. Formation emphasises the arrangement and reads well as an institution ("the sect's formation"); array emphasises the technical structure and reads well as a device ("the array collapsed"). Both appear in published translations, often within the same book, which is a genuine annoyance for readers trying to search.

Some translators use "magic circle", which is worse than either. It imports Western ceremonial magic and implies something drawn for a single ritual rather than built once and left running.

How a formation fights

A sect is attacked and the outer formation activates. The attacking force now has two problems: survive the effect and locate the eye. Most formation arcs are structured as a search, not a battle.

An insider is usually required. Formations are keyed to a token or a bloodline, which is how a traitor becomes worth their price.

A formation outlives its maker. Ruins in the genre are dangerous because the array is still running a thousand years after whoever set it died, and nobody knows what it was built to do.

What readers confuse it with

Formation Eye 阵眼
The controlling node. Destroy or take it and the array stops. Every formation fight is really about this single point. Which is why defenders hide it and attackers hunt it.
Talisman
A one-use inscribed paper. A talisman does a thing once; a formation does a thing continuously. Readers mix them up because both are drawn with the same brush and the same script.
Spirit Vein
The qi supply a large formation draws on. An array built on a weak vein is a small array no matter how well it is drawn, and cutting the vein is often easier than breaking the formation.

Common questions

What is a formation in xianxia?

An arrangement of inscribed nodes that pools qi into one continuous effect: a defence, an illusion, a trap, a teleport network. It has a central control node called the eye, and destroying the eye ends the effect.

What is a formation eye?

The node that defines what the formation does and coordinates the rest. It is the single point of failure, so it is concealed, sometimes inside a decoy formation. Finding it is the objective in nearly every formation battle.

How do you break a formation?

Three routes, in increasing difficulty: cut its qi supply, destroy the eye, or overload it with more force than it can route. Protagonists usually take the second because it produces a better scene, and because the eye is often guarded by the person who built it.

Can a cultivator use a formation alone?

Yes, but poorly. Several models circulate and novels rarely pick one. Some arrays need people feeding separate nodes; others run on a token, a bloodline or a stored supply and need one operator. A single cultivator can run a small array, or a large one at a fraction of its rated power.
