The small gear that keeps a plot moving: where things are stored, how messages travel, where people hide.
69 terms
| Chinese | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 悟道石 | Enlightenment Stone | A stone people sit on to think. Owning one starts wars quietly. |
| 灵玉床 | Spirit Jade Bed | A bed of jade that speeds cultivation while you sleep. The perk that keeps core disciples loyal. |
| 聚灵梭 | Qi-Gathering Shuttle | A mobile gathering formation. A cave residence that follows you around. |
| 储灵戒 | Qi Storage Ring | A ring for storing qi rather than objects. A battery, in a world with no electricity. |
| 蕴神玉 | Soul-Nurturing Jade | Jade that feeds the soul. Alchemists and ghost cultivators both refuse to share. |
| 定魂钉 | Soul-Fixing Nail | A nail that pins a soul in place. Stops possession, and stops escape. |
| 通讯玉简 | Communication Jade Slip | Messages stored in jade, passed hand to hand. Slower than a talisman and untraceable. |
| 传讯玉 | Message Jade | Two halves, one carried by each party. Works once, which makes it dramatic. |
| 通行证 | Pass | Permission to enter a restricted area. Usually counterfeit in act two. |
| 乾坤戒 | Heaven and Earth Ring | A storage ring with a much larger interior. Sometimes has a spirit inside, which is how it becomes a character. |
| 飞舟 | Sky Skiff | Smaller and faster than a spirit boat. Personal craft, usually owned by someone insufferable. |
| 测灵碑 | Testing Stele | A larger version used for crowds. Smaller sects cannot afford one, which is why their disciples are unlucky. |
| 聚灵阵盘 | Qi-Gathering Array Disc | A portable formation for training. Two hours inside, two days outside. |
| 洞府牌 | Cave Token | The key to a sect-assigned dwelling. Losing it means losing your home, which is a plot in itself. |
| 灵田契约 | Field Lease | Paper for a plot of spirit farmland. Boring, and the reason a sect has money. |
| 镇纸 | Paperweight | A heavy object on a scholar's desk. Occasionally a concealed weapon, always a good one. |
| 书签 | Bookmark | Marks a page. In one famous case, the bookmark is the treasure and the book is ordinary. |
| 香炉 | Incense Burner | Holds the incense used for focus and for offerings. Some are artifacts that produce specific smoke. |
| 铜镜 | Bronze Mirror | Ordinary object, extraordinary uses: scrying, warding, or showing the truth of a face. |
| 油灯 | Oil Lamp | Light in a cave. Rarely mentioned without a reason. |
| 斗笠 | Bamboo Hat | Headwear for people who do not want to be recognised. The genre's least subtle disguise. |
| 蓑衣 | Straw Rain Cloak | Worn by wanderers and fishermen. Signals a character who has given something up. |
| 酒葫芦 | Wine Gourd | A gourd for liquor, hung at the waist. Usually contains something better than wine. |
| 拂尘 | Horsetail Whisk | The Daoist's brush. In a fight it is a soft weapon that redirects rather than blocks. |
| 玉佩 | Jade Pendant | Gift, heirloom or tracker. Parentage reveals run on these. |
| 信物 | Token of Promise | An object that stands for a vow. Returning it cancels the vow, which is a whole scene. |
| 锦囊 | Silk Pouch | A small bundle, sometimes with instructions to open at a specific moment. The instructions are always right. |
| 密信 | Sealed Letter | A letter that should not be read by the wrong person. Every courier plot depends on it. |
| 名帖 | Calling Card | A formal card left when visiting. Its thickness tells a host how much to worry. |
| 拜帖 | Visiting Card | The version used to request an audience. Refusing to accept one is a declaration of hostility. |
| 灵舟票 | Boat Ticket | Paid passage on a sect's flying boat. Cheap seats get a deck and a storm. |
| 护身符 | Protective Charm | A small talisman worn on the body. Stops one hit, then crumbles. |
| 护腕 | Bracer | Worn on the forearm. In forging scenes, it has a formation sewn inside. |
| 腰带 | Belt | Holds a robe and, in this genre, a thin sword. |
| 扇子 | Folding Fan | A scholar's accessory. In a fight, it hides needles or hides nothing and is simply metal. |
| 烟杆 | Tobacco Pipe | An old character's prop. Long, and used as a short staff if the smoke does not work. |
| 拂尘柄 | Whisk Handle | The business end of a horsetail whisk. Usually the part that is actually a weapon. |
| 木鱼 | Wooden Fish | A monk's percussion instrument. The rhythm is a meditation aid and, in some books, a sonic attack. |
| 念珠 | Prayer Beads | Counting beads. Each bead can store a chant, which makes them a magazine. |
| 佛珠 | Buddhist Rosary | The proper name for the same object. Used in exorcism scenes. |
| 僧人 | Monk | A practising monastic. In this genre, either a healer or an exceptionally calm killer. |
| 道袍 | Daoist Robe | The loose blue robe. Recognisable at distance, and it hides a lot. |
| 方士 | Ritual Practitioner | Someone who does rites rather than cultivation. Slightly disreputable and occasionally indispensable. |
| 卜卦 | Cast a Hexagram | Divination with the trigrams. Reliable in narrative terms, vague in dialogue. |
| 算盘 | Abacus | Counting tool. Merchants use it, and so do diviners, which is funnier. |
| 墨斗 | Ink Line | A carpenter's marking tool. In formation work, it draws straight lines that hold energy. |
| 罗盘 | Compass | Navigation, and also feng shui. The needle points at energy lines, not north. |
| 阳宅 | Dwelling Site | Where people live. Chosen by feng shui, and by whoever already owns the good ground. |
| 阴宅 | Burial Site | Where people are buried. The genre puts treasures in them, which is why grave robbing exists in the setting. |
| 纸人 | Paper Figure | A cut-paper person used as a substitute or a decoy. Cheap and creepy. |
| 稻草人 | Straw Effigy | The scarier version, used in curses. Its head always ends up somewhere. |
| 斗篷 | Cloak | Hides the face and the build. Every messenger is wearing one. |
| 面具 | Mask | Covers the face. In this genre, the villain's mask is a promise of a later reveal. |
| 发簪 | Hairpin | A woman's ornament that is also a needle, a key, or a dagger. |
| 耳坠 | Earring | Jewellery, sometimes a communication device. |
| 戒指 | Ring | Storage, signet, or both. Which one it is becomes clear at a bad moment. |
| 玉佩信物 | Jade Token | A jade object that identifies a family. Recognised across provinces, for good or ill. |
| 账本 | Ledger | The sect's books. Stealing it is a smarter plan than stealing the treasury. |
| 秘境钥匙 | Realm Key | The object that opens a sealed place. There is always exactly one, and someone else has it. |
| 地图残片 | Map Fragment | Part of a map. Three pieces, three arcs. |
| 测灵石 | Spirit Testing Stone | The stone a child touches to reveal their spirit root. The first scene of most stories. |
| 传讯符 | Transmission Talisman | A talisman that carries a short message. Burns up after one use. |
| 身份令牌 | Identity Token | A jade or metal token proving which sect you belong to. Lose it and you are nobody. |
| 聚灵阵 | Spirit Gathering Formation | A formation that concentrates ambient qi. Turns a room into a training chamber. |
| 洞府 | Cave Residence | A cultivator's private home, usually cut into a mountain. Status symbol as much as shelter. |
| 闭关密室 | Seclusion Chamber | A sealed room for long cultivation. Entering one means disappearing for months. |
| 储物戒 | Storage Ring | A ring with a space inside. Smaller and more expensive than a storage pouch. |
| 灵茶 | Spirit Tea | Tea brewed from spirit leaves. Served to guests, and a quiet display of wealth. |
| 传音 | Voice Transmission | Speaking mind to mind. Private, and impossible to overhear. |
These items exist to remove inconvenience, and translators mostly need the standard name so readers recognise them. Renderings follow the free cultivation novels at cultivationnovel.com.
