Mortal (凡人)
A Mortal is an ordinary person with no cultivation. In a genre where the powerful live for centuries, the mortal is the unit of measurement that makes the gap legible.

What Mortal means
The compound is ordinary and person, and 凡 is doing more work than ordinary. In religious usage it marks what has not left the worldly order, the unrefined and the still mortal, so it means ordinary by contrast with the sacred.
It is the baseline of the lifespan scale. Mortals live decades and cultivators live centuries, and the gap is the first thing a novel establishes. It is not just long life but the end of the ordinary death.
It is the origin of every cultivator. Nobody is born cultivating, and the genre uses the mortal period as the part of a character's life that explains what they are willing to do to leave it.
Why the genre needs a word for everyone else
Mortal is the standard translation, and some versions use ordinary person or commoner. The English is the right choice for a different reason: it carries the sense of being subject to death, which matches 凡.
It is not the same as weak, which is a relative term. A mortal is absolutely outside the system rather than at the bottom of it, and the genre keeps the distinction because a mortal cannot cultivate and a weak cultivator can.
The term is easy to confuse with the mortal world, which is the place, not the person. One is a category of being; the other is a category of geography.
How the term frames the power gap
It is the measure of cruelty. A cultivator who kills mortals is committing an atrocity, and the genre uses the word to mark acts that are crimes, not combat.
It is the origin story. A protagonist who began as a mortal carries the memory of the gap, and the genre uses that memory as the explanation for either humility or ruthlessness.
It is the stakes. When a battle threatens a city, the mortals in it are what is actually at risk, and the genre varies on whether the cultivators notice. The inattention marks who has stopped counting them.

What readers confuse it with
- Mortal World 凡间
- The place rather than the person, and the world most protagonists start in. The two terms are the same distinction as citizen and country.
- Qi Refining
- The first rung above this one, and the boundary between the categories. Crossing it is the moment a mortal stops being a mortal.
- Longevity
- What the category lacks, and the thing cultivators pursue. The mortal lifespan is the zero on the scale the genre measures everything against, though what cultivators want is an exit from it.
Common questions
Can a mortal become a cultivator?
Yes, and that is the origin story of most protagonists. The transition requires a spirit root and a technique, and the genre treats both as rare enough to make the crossing an event.
Do mortals matter in these stories?
They matter as stakes. A battle that kills cultivators is a duel; a battle that kills a city of mortals is a catastrophe, and the genre uses the difference to grade its villains.
Is the term insulting?
It is a category, but it is used as a put-down constantly. Calling a strong cultivator a mortal denies them the status they climbed for, and the word also means one still inside the ordinary world.
What is the literal meaning?
Ordinary person, in the specific sense of one still inside the worldly order. The word contrasts with the sacred as well as with the cultivated, and the older contrast is what a cultivator invokes.
