Qi Refining (练气)
Qi Refining is the first realm. A mortal learns to pull qi into the body, hold it, and move it along the meridians. Nothing spectacular happens, and most people never leave.

Entry pointThis is where the ladder starts. Everything below it is a mortal with a weapon.

What Qi Refining actually is
The whole realm is plumbing. Qi comes in through the nose and skin, gets pushed into the meridians, and is circulated until the channels stop resisting. Two spellings of the word are in circulation, and they are the same word: one keeps the character for smelting, the other uses a simplified form of it. Neither changes the meaning, and translators who write qi refining are following the second. Layers of it are counted in the Chinese sources — nine is common — and each layer means the channels carry more without leaking.
What it does not do is make you dangerous. A Qi Refining cultivator is stronger than a mortal and still dies to a crossbow bolt, a fall, or three men with spears. Novels use this constantly: the first arc needs the protagonist to be outmatched by ordinary violence so that the first real technique feels like a turning point.
Time is the other cost. Ten years is unremarkable. A hundred is possible. That number is the genre's way of saying that most people who start never finish, and it sets the value of everything above it.
Why the translation reads better than it sounds
The literal rendering is "practising qi", which sounds like a breathing exercise. Qi Refining sounds like an industrial process, and that is closer to how the realm is written. Refine is a rough fit rather than a mistake; it names the same working-on-a-substance that the Chinese character carries: raw material in, impurities out, repeat until it holds.
Some translations use Qi Condensation or Qi Gathering. Condensation describes the mechanics the stage is about, making qi dense enough to stay. Gathering is used just as often for a completely different word meaning to collect qi, so it is the one to avoid if you want your vocabulary to stay clean.
Whatever you pick, use it in the realm ladder and nowhere else. The single most common translation error in this genre is reusing a realm name for an ordinary action in the same paragraph.
How it behaves in a scene
Early chapters are almost always set here, and the author is doing two jobs at once: teaching the reader the rules, and establishing that the protagonist is at the bottom of them.
The layer count gives the author a progress bar that costs nothing to mention. "Third layer" tells the reader exactly where a character stands relative to everyone in the room, without a fight scene.
Watch for the character who has been at this stage for fifty years. In a genre obsessed with talent, the person who stalled is usually the one who gets a scene that is worth more than the protagonist's.
What readers confuse it with
- Foundation Establishment
- The next realm. Qi Refining fills the channels; Foundation builds something to hold the pressure. The transition is the first real bottleneck in the genre.
- Spiritual Energy 灵力
- The raw stuff in the air. You refine the energy; the realm is named after the activity, not the substance.
- Qi Deviation 走火入魔
- What happens when the circulation goes wrong at this stage. The lower the realm, the more often it happens and the less often it kills.
Common questions
What is Qi Refining in cultivation novels?
The first realm, where a mortal learns to absorb qi and circulate it through the meridians. It is divided into layers, usually nine. The cultivator gets stronger and lives a little longer, but is still vulnerable to ordinary weapons. Which is why most first arcs keep the threats mundane.
How long does Qi Refining take?
Ten years is normal, a hundred is possible, and a talented character with a good technique can do it in three. The number matters because it calibrates everything above: if the first realm takes a decade, reaching the fourth in thirty years reads as impossible, which is the point.
What are the layers in Qi Refining?
Divisions within the realm, usually nine, sometimes twelve. Each one is a small breakthrough, not a new realm, so a character can advance several times without the story stopping. Authors use the count to show fine-grained progress during arcs where nothing else is happening.
Can you skip Qi Refining?
Only by cheating, and the genre treats it as cheating. A pill, a transplanted root, or a body that was rebuilt by someone else can put a character past this stage instantly, and the cost is always a foundation that cannot support what comes next.
In our own novels
The lower realms get compressed into a single chapter here, which is typical: Qi Refining is the stage nobody lingers on, and the word appears mostly to tell you how far a character has not got.
