First Grade (一品)

Grades and Measures · section 03

First grade is the highest rank on a nine-step scale, not the lowest. Chinese grading runs one to nine with one at the top, which is the opposite of how a reader expecting English numbering will read it, and the mistake is common enough that translators often front-load the explanation.

What the grade scales rank, and where they collide

The nine-step scale is old and bureaucratic, inherited from the imperial ranking system for officials. One to nine, one highest, and below nine an unranked category that is essentially a polite way of saying worthless. A ninth-grade pill is cheap; a first-grade pill is the kind a sect fights over.

The same scale is applied to almost everything: pills, artefacts, herbs, formations, spirit veins, and sects themselves. This makes the vocabulary efficient — a character can say "first grade" and the listener knows the price range, the required realm, and roughly who would be allowed to own it.

Higher-tier systems stack a second axis on top. Beyond first grade come the "peak" or "peerless" grades, and separately the four names from the Thousand Character Classic run as a scale of their own, so a long novel works both without converting between them.

Why the same characters mean different things in different places

The root word means grade or quality as a noun and to appraise as a verb. A first-grade item is literally one grade. English "first grade" collides with the school year, and "first-class" collides with travel. Most translations keep grade and accept the collision.

Some translations use "tier" to avoid the school association, and tier has the advantage of not implying an order. It has the disadvantage of being the word the genre also uses for cultivation realms, which is a worse collision.

The reference point is the ceiling. A reader who knows that a first-grade pill sits at the top of a nine-step scale reads every other grade correctly without a table. A reader who assumes one is the bottom reads the whole economy backwards.

How to read a grade in a scene

Grades are used as price. "A third-grade pill" tells a reader what a character can afford without a currency figure, and it also tells them what realm that character is in.

Grades are used as insult. Calling someone's artefact ninth grade is a way of calling them poor in front of witnesses, and the response is usually a demonstration, not an argument.

Grades are used as gatekeeping. A first-grade herb requires a specific realm to refine, so owning one without the realm to use it is a death sentence dressed as a windfall. This is an extremely common early plot.

What readers confuse it with

Low Grade 下品
The bottom of the usable range. Cheap, common, and the standard starting equipment of an outer disciple. Not an insult on its own; calling a specific item low grade is.
Heaven Rank
A separate four-name scale, heaven, earth, mystic, yellow, used for techniques and artefacts in many novels. It comes from the Thousand Character Classic and has nothing to do with the nine grades, which it is used alongside.
Spirit Stone
How grades are priced in practice. A low-grade item costs a handful of stones, and the price rises by roughly an order of magnitude per grade. A first-grade item is usually paid for in favours rather than stones.

Common questions

Does first grade mean the best or the worst in xianxia?

The best. Chinese grading runs one to nine with one at the top, inherited from the imperial ranking of officials. A ninth-grade pill is cheap and a first-grade pill is a prize.

What is a first-grade pill worth?

In most systems, a year or more of a mid-tier disciple's income, which means it is usually obtained through a favour or an inheritance rather than bought. Novels sometimes quote a price in spirit stones to show how absurd it is.

What comes after first grade?

Usually a peak grade or a peerless grade. Separately, many novels use heaven, earth, mystic and yellow for items above the mortal scale. The two systems are unrelated, and novels running both are rarely consistent about which converts to which.

Why are there nine grades and not ten?

Nine is the conventional maximum in Chinese numerical classification, and a tenth slot would be an unranked category. The ninth grade is the bottom of the ranked scale; anything below it is not graded at all.
