What the Heaven Rank is

The grade is the top of a common four-tier ladder: heaven, earth, dark, yellow. The four characters open the Thousand Character Classic, where the line describes the sky as dark and the earth as yellow. Read as a ladder, they become four ranks.

It applies to almost everything that can be graded, and it runs beside another ladder. The same objects are sorted into nine grades, where one is the top, and the two systems are not routinely converted.

It is often the boundary between mortal and immortal. A heaven-grade item is usually the strongest a mortal sect can hold, and the genre uses it as the last rung before immortal-grade items appear.

Why the top of the tiering system is named after heaven

Heaven Rank is the standard translation, and some versions use celestial grade or heavenly tier. The English supplies a ceiling the Chinese does not claim. 天 is one word from a line about weather and soil.

It is not the same as an immortal-grade item, which is the next system up. The heaven rank is the top of the mortal ladder, and immortal-grade goods are not sold where mortal-grade goods are.

The grade is easy to confuse with the earth rank, which is the tier below it. The two are named from the same cosmology and the gap between them is the gap most plots run on.

How the grade is used in a plot

It is the prize of an early arc. A heaven-grade technique is the strongest thing a young protagonist can plausibly obtain, and the genre uses it as the reward that carries them to the middle of the ladder.

It is the grade that cannot be earned by effort. A heaven-grade technique is usually found, inherited or inherited through a master, and the genre uses its rarity to explain why one sect outranks another without any fight on the page.

It is the ceiling that has to break. A protagonist who has maxed the mortal grades needs a source outside the system, and the heaven rank is the wall they hit. The noun changes, not the number.

Characters used above

The prose on this page names these in English. Here they are written out, in the order they came up.

天阶The highest tier of techniques and treasures

What readers confuse it with

Earth Rank
The tier immediately below, and the grade most sects actually run on. The gap between the two is the most common power difference in the genre.
Dark Rank
The third tier, and the grade of ordinary sect techniques. The full ladder runs heaven, earth, dark, yellow, and most characters spend the novel below the top two.
Spirit Treasure
The immortal-grade object, and the system above this one. Heaven rank is the top of the mortal ladder; spirit treasures are above it, graded by a different tradition.

Common questions

What are the four ranks?

Heaven, earth, dark, yellow, in descending order. The words open the Thousand Character Classic as a description of sky and soil; read as a ladder they become four ranks.

Is heaven rank the strongest grade?

It is the strongest of the mortal grades. Immortal-grade objects exist above it, and the arrival of one is usually the moment a novel changes scale.

What does the rank apply to?

Anything gradable: techniques, pills, weapons, formations, bloodlines. The rank is a property of the item, and it is tracked separately from the owner's realm.

Why is it called heaven rank?

Because the four names come from a line about the sky and the ground. Read in order they put heaven before earth, and the genre treats the sequence as a ranking.
