Cultivation Technique (功法)
A cultivation technique is a complete method for absorbing, refining and circulating qi. Its rank caps how far a cultivator can go. Which is why access to a good one is a plot.

What a technique contains
A technique is not a single move. It is a full system: how to breathe, which meridians to route qi through, how to compress it, what to do at each bottleneck. Learning one takes years, and switching later is costly because the body has been trained into a shape.
Rank decides the ceiling. A low-ranked technique gets a cultivator to Foundation Establishment and then stops working, no matter how talented the person is. This is the genre's cleanest way to explain why a strong character cannot simply train harder.
The gates come in layers: sect-exclusive, family-exclusive, realm-restricted, price-restricted. Most plots about sect politics are, underneath, plots about who is allowed to read which book.
Why four Chinese words collapse into two English ones
Chinese has four words where English has two usable ones: the overall practice, the mental method inside it, a secret art, and a spell. English technique, method, art and spell map onto them roughly but not exactly.
The convention that has settled in web-novel translation is technique for the overall practice and method for the mental half. It is imperfect, because English technique sounds like a skill and the Chinese word is closer to a curriculum.
Whatever you choose, the important thing is to reserve the word. If a character "uses a technique" in combat, the writer almost certainly means a spell or a move, not the system they practise every morning. Mixing the two makes every fight scene slightly wrong.
How it behaves in a scene
Access is the scene. A character is given a technique, denied one, or discovers one in a place they should not be. The emotional content is all about permission.
Upgrading is an arc. A better technique arrives from a master, a ruin, an auction, or a dying enemy, and the acquisition is usually more dramatic than the practising.
The other use is betrayal infrastructure. A technique that was taught to two people can identify one of them, which is how the genre catches traitors and proves identity.
What readers confuse it with
- Cultivation Method 心法
- The internal half: how to move qi in the mind rather than the body. A technique contains a method, but the method alone is not enough to cultivate.
- Divine Ability 神通
- A specific power rather than a practice. Techniques are studied for years; abilities are usually awakened.
- Sword Intent 剑意
- A state reached through practice, not a book. The distinction matters because a character can own a technique and still not have the intent.
Common questions
What is a cultivation technique?
A complete method for absorbing qi, circulating it through specific meridians, and breaking through each stage. It is studied over years, not learned in a scene. Each one has a rank, and that rank caps how far it can take a cultivator regardless of their talent.
What is the difference between a technique and a method?
The technique is the whole practice; the method is the internal part inside it. In most translations, technique means the complete system and method means the mental component. A technique usually contains a method plus circulation routes plus breakthrough instructions.
Do techniques have ranks?
Usually four: yellow, mystic, earth, and heaven, sometimes with subdivisions. The ranks are named after the four-tier ladder used for items and pills as well. A heaven-ranked technique is worth a war; a yellow-ranked one is what outer disciples are handed on day one.
Can you switch techniques?
Yes, but it costs. The body adapts to a circulation pattern, and changing it means retraining the meridians, which takes years and can damage them if done carelessly. It also explains why an old character cannot simply pick up a better book.
In our own novels
The joke about a peak disciple threatening a hidden ancestor only works if you already know that a technique and a realm are different kinds of thing. Novels assume that knowledge; the glossary is here because a new reader does not have it.
