Cultivation Method (心法)
A cultivation method is the inner component of a practice: the mental instructions for moving and refining qi. A technique is the whole system; the method is how the mind drives it.

What a method does that a technique does not
The split is between instructions for the body and instructions for the mind. A technique tells you which meridian to route qi through and when to compress. A method tells you how to hold the mind while doing it, which is the part that goes wrong at every bottleneck.
Methods are where the flavour lives. The same basic circulation, driven by two different methods, produces different results: one builds a steady foundation, another trades stability for speed, a third does something that other cultivators find disturbing.
They are also the part that can be taught quietly. A technique takes years on the manual. The mental key that makes a method work is the part a dying master can give in a sentence. The result: it appears in so many dying-instruction scenes.
Why heart is in the Chinese word
The headword literally means heart method, and the first character in Chinese covers what English splits into heart and mind. The word is about mental discipline, not emotion, though novels often blur the two because a character who cannot control their feelings cannot hold a method.
Method is a flat word and a good one. It signals instructions rather than magic, and it pairs cleanly with technique in the sentence "he practised the technique but not the method", which is a line this genre needs to be able to write.
Some translations use mental technique or inner art. Both are clearer to a new reader and both break the technique/method pairing that most books depend on. Consistency beats precision here.
How it behaves in a scene
Deathbed transmissions are almost always methods, not techniques. There is no time for years of practice, so the master gives the part that can be given in words.
A conflict between method and personality is a standard character problem. A ruthless method used by someone who is not ruthless produces cracks, and the cracks show up as stagnation or as an inner demon.
Novels also use method to explain why a stolen manual did not help. The thief has the circulation routes and not the mental discipline, and the result is qi deviation.
What readers confuse it with
- Cultivation Technique 功法
- The complete system. A method is a component of it. Owning the method without the technique is like having the principle without the procedure.
- Dao Heart 道心
- Conviction, not instruction. A method trains the mind to hold a shape; the dao heart is what the mind is holding it for.
- Divine Sense 神识
- Perception. Methods are often described as being held in the mind. Readers confuse the two in scenes about mental discipline.
Common questions
What is a cultivation method?
The mental component of a cultivation practice: how to hold the mind while absorbing and refining qi, and what to do internally at each bottleneck. It is distinct from the overall technique, which also covers circulation routes and physical procedure.
Why is it called a heart method?
Because the Chinese word covers both heart and mind. It refers to mental discipline rather than emotion, though the two are linked in practice: a cultivator who cannot control their feelings usually cannot hold a method either.
Can a method be taught quickly?
Yes, and that is its narrative advantage. A technique takes years of practice. What a dying master can hand over in a conversation is the key to a method, the oral formula that makes it usable. The technique round it still has to be learned, which is why the transmission opens an arc rather than closing one.
What happens if you use the wrong method?
Usually qi deviation. The body has been trained into one circulation pattern; a method that drives it differently creates conflict, and conflict at high qi pressure damages the meridians. This is the standard explanation for why a stolen manual is dangerous.
A note from the translation desk
Distinguished from a technique by being internal: a method is what a cultivator circulates, a technique is what they release. The two are constantly paired in dialogue as a set, and a translation that collapses both into "technique" makes those lines tautological.
