Void Refining (炼虚)
Void Refining is the sixth realm. The cultivator stops refining qi and starts refining the void: the empty space between things, which can be folded, cut, and walked through.

From Spirit SeveringThe soul is tempered and cut down until it can act at a distance without a body. That rung lasts 2,000-3,000 years. Here, power is drawn from the void rather than from the body's reserve.

What Void Refining is
The shift is conceptual, and it is where a lot of readers stop following. Up to here, every realm has been about the body: channels, foundation, core, soul. Void Refining works on something outside the body, the space a person occupies.
In practice it shows up as movement. A Void Refining cultivator can step from one place to another without crossing the distance, cut a slice out of the world and put it somewhere else, or hide a room inside a fold of space nobody can find.
The headword starts with a genuinely tricky character. It means emptiness, but also the abstract, the insubstantial, and in Daoist writing it is close to the unformed. The realm is not about nothingness; it is about what is left when you stop treating objects as solid. The name is a web-novel invention, not a classical stage, and it echoes an internal alchemy phrase in which refining the void is the last step before union with the dao.
Why void is not quite the right word
Void Refining keeps the verb, and the verb matters: the realm is still refining, still work, still a process. Void Immortal or Void God would have read as a rank rather than a stage.
The alternative is Space Refining, which is clearer for new readers and worse for tone. Space in English is a room and an outer-space and a keyboard key. Void, for all its gothic weight, is less ambiguous in this context.
One caution: void in English carries a whiff of void magic and eldritch horror. The Chinese does not. If your prose picks up that colour, pull it back toward geometry — folds, gaps, distances — rather than darkness.
How it behaves in a scene
Movement scenes change shape here. An enemy who can step through space cannot be cornered, so the fight becomes about predicting where they will appear rather than where they are. Authors who cannot write that usually give the character a cooldown.
Storage stops being a problem here. A ring or a sleeve can hold a room. Novels that were previously limited by what a character could carry stop worrying about it, which is usually the moment the shopping arcs begin.
The vulnerability is the same as the power. Someone who folds space can be trapped in a fold, and the genre has a standard punishment for arrogant Void Refining cultivators: sealed in a pocket of nothing, alive, for a very long time.
What readers confuse it with
- Spirit Severing
- The realm below. Severing works on the soul; Void Refining works on the space the soul occupies. The transition is one of the harder ones for readers to follow.
- Body Integration
- The realm above, where the body and the laws of the world are brought into agreement. Void Refining manipulates space; Body Integration stops needing to.
- Secret Realm 秘境
- A location, not a realm. The words collide in English constantly. A secret realm is a place a cultivator enters; Void Refining is a stage a cultivator reaches.
Common questions
What is Void Refining?
The sixth realm in the common ladder. The cultivator stops refining qi and starts working on space itself, gaining the ability to move without crossing distance, fold areas into hiding, and cut sections of the world away. It is the first realm defined by a concept rather than a body part.
What is the difference between Void Refining and Body Integration?
Void Refining manipulates external space; Body Integration reconciles the internal body with the laws of the world. A Void Refining cultivator can move a room somewhere else. A Body Integration cultivator does not need the room, because the world agrees with them about where they should be.
Why do novels get vague at this realm?
Because the mechanics stop being visual. Channels and cores can be described; folded space resists description, so authors switch to effects — arriving without crossing the distance, a sleeve that holds a mountain — and skip the explanation. If a novel suddenly gets abstract around the sixth realm, that is why.
Is the void dangerous to the cultivator?
In most systems, yes. Entering the void without preparation is described as losing the thread back to your own body. That is why the realm usually comes with a technique for anchoring, and why the failure mode is being sealed, not being killed.
A note from the translation desk
The verb lian, to refine or smelt, is carried over from qi refining, and the parallel is intentional: at the bottom of the ladder a cultivator refines breath, at the top he refines emptiness. Keeping both as refining preserves the ladder the author built.
