Spirit Herb (灵草)
A spirit herb is a plant that has taken in enough qi to be useful to a cultivator. The definition is functional rather than botanical: if refining it produces something that advances cultivation or heals it, it is one. Everything else in the category follows from that.

What makes a herb a spirit herb
Value is a product of age and grade, and the two are related but not identical. A century of growth moves a herb up a grade; a thousand years moves it up several and makes it the kind of object a sect will fight over. Novels quote ages constantly because age is the readable proxy for price.
They are not interchangeable. A pill recipe names specific herbs and a substitution weakens the result. Alchemists spend chapters hunting one ingredient rather than buying the other four. The genre uses this to send characters somewhere.
They are living things with requirements. Spirit herbs need qi-dense soil, so they grow on spirit veins, in grotto-heavens, or in guarded gardens. A wild patch is a discovery; a cultivated garden is an asset with a guard and a schedule.
Why grass and not herb
The character is grass, and translators split between "spirit grass", "spirit herb" and "spirit plant". Herb is the practical choice because the category includes roots, fruits and fungi as well as leafy plants, and "grass" would exclude most of them.
The character for spirit in these compounds is the same one as in spirit root and spirit stone. It marks something as belonging to the qi-bearing layer of the world, and it is applied indiscriminately to plants, stones, beasts and places. Rendering it consistently is one of the small things that makes a translation legible.
"Immortal herb" translates a different compound, and the difference is quality and origin more than rank. The immortal one is the kind that grows in immortals' ground; a spirit herb is the ordinary kind, and what novels normally mean when a recipe says herb is spirit.
How herbs drive a scene
The gathering scene. A character hears about a patch, travels, competes with a rival for it, and the fight is over a plant. The genre runs entire arcs on this.
The payment. A spirit herb is the standard unit of value for a favour too large for money. This is why alchemists have influence out of proportion to their combat strength.
The trap. A patch that is too easy to reach is guarded, booby-trapped, or a cultivation lure set by the plant itself. Novels use the third version when they want the setting to be predatory.
What readers confuse it with
- Spirit Medicine 灵药
- The refined or refineable product rather than the growing plant. The distinction is between raw material and ingredient, and novels use both words for the same object at different stages of a plot.
- Demon Core 妖丹
- The equivalent resource from a beast rather than a plant. Both are ingredients and both are harvested, but a demon core requires killing something that can fight back. That is why it is usually worth more.
- Herb Garden 药园
- The cultivated version. A garden is a sect asset with a guard rota, and stealing from one is a specific and serious crime that novels like to stage.
Common questions
What is a spirit herb in xianxia?
A plant that has absorbed qi and can be refined into pills or consumed directly to aid cultivation. Value depends on age and grade, and the highest-grade ones only grow where qi is dense. Which is why sects keep gardens on spirit veins.
Why are old spirit herbs worth more?
Because qi accumulates with age, so a thousand-year herb contains far more than ten hundred-year herbs and refines into a higher-grade product. Novels use age as the readable measure of price, and a character identifying a herb's age is doing an appraisal.
Can spirit herbs be farmed?
Yes, and the genre is split on how well. Most novels allow cultivation in gardens but treat wild herbs as better, since a plant left alone for centuries reaches grades a managed garden cannot. A few settings have proper agricultural sects.
What is the difference between a spirit herb and a spirit medicine?
Stage of processing. A herb is the growing plant; a medicine is what it becomes, or what it is called when the speaker is thinking about its use, not its origin. Novels use them loosely and readers should not over-read the difference.
