Primordial Chaos (混沌)
Primordial Chaos is the undifferentiated condition the world emerged from. In the old books it is a state of affairs, and in one of them a faceless being. Novels merge the two with the cosmic egg and make the result the source of everything outside the rules.

What Primordial Chaos is
The old books use the word for a condition, not a container. The Zhuangzi describes a thing complete before heaven and earth, standing alone and unchanging, and calls it 混沌. The egg is a separate image, and the two are joined only in later retellings.
The same word also names a figure. The Classic of Mountains and Seas describes a god of the western mountains, bird-faced and six-footed, with no face at all, and calls him Hundun. He is not the state and makes nothing. Novels read the two as one.
It is the strongest possible material. Chaos qi, chaos iron, and chaos-grade anything are the top of every material ladder in the genre, and the reason is always the same: this stuff is older than the rules it violates.
Why the state before the world is treated as the strongest material
Primordial Chaos is the standard translation, and some versions use hundun or the primordial state. The English chaos carries the right sense of an unordered condition, and the word has become the default.
It is not the same as the void between worlds, a spatial location. Chaos is a before rather than a between. In the Zhuangzi it is also a virtue: the one who has it resembles it, and is left alone.
The term is easy to confuse with a chaotic or unruly situation in the ordinary sense. In the genre it is always a specific cosmological state, capitalised in meaning even when it is not capitalised in print.
How the layer is used in a setting
It is the origin of the strongest bloodlines. A character born with chaos qi, or who cultivates in a chaos-grade environment, is outside the normal ladder, and the genre uses that to justify a protagonist who beats everyone.
It is the location of the endgame. A realm that touches the primordial layer is a realm where the rules are negotiable, and the genre saves those for the final act.
It is the explanation for a power that should not work. When a technique does something the system says is impossible, the genre attributes it to a chaos-grade source, and the explanation is always accepted.
Characters used above
The prose on this page names these in English. Here they are written out, in the order they came up.

What readers confuse it with
- Pangu
- The being who emerged from this state and imposed order on it. The chaos is the before; Pangu is the act that ended it, and the two are one story.
- Chaos Pearl
- The most common object drawn from this layer, and the standard way a novel hands a character power that predates the rules.
- The Void 虚空
- The space between worlds, which is a location, not a state. Both are places the rules bend, but only one of them is a before.
Common questions
Is primordial chaos a real concept?
Yes, in two separable senses. The undifferentiated state is a feature of classical cosmology; the egg is an image in the Pangu story. Treating the egg as what chaos is, and an axe as born inside it, is a convention of web fiction.
Why is anything from it so strong?
Because it predates the laws. An object formed before the rules cannot be bound by them, and that is the entire argument the genre makes for chaos-grade power.
Can a cultivator go there?
In most systems, no. It is a before rather than a place, and the rift a novel invents is a portal in space, a different kind of thing from a condition that has already ended.
What is the difference between this and the void?
Time and space. Chaos is the state before the world; the void is the space between worlds. Both are outside the ordinary order, but only one of them is a before.
