Grand Elder (大长老)
A Grand Elder is the head of a sect's council of elders. The office ranks above an ordinary elder and below the hidden ancestors, and using elder for all three erases the ladder the plot runs on.

What a Grand Elder is
The office is a chair, not an age. A grand elder presides over the council, and the council outranks the sect master on most questions of policy. That inversion is the point of the institution.
The ladder above it has four tiers. Ordinary elders sit on the council, a grand elder runs it, supreme elders outrank the council without attending it, and above them sit the ancestors in seclusion who appear only when the sect is about to end. Each tier intervenes less often and decides more.
Power follows the office. A grand elder is usually the strongest cultivator in the sect after any hidden ancestors. The result: the post is contested, not ceremonial. Novels stage the contest as politics rather than as a duel.
Why three tiers need three words
Grand elder is the standard rendering and it does the ranking work in English: elder, grand elder, supreme elder is a scale a reader can feel. The Chinese prefix means eldest or chief, as it does in eldest brother. Senior would mark length of service, which is a different thing.
Senior elder is the other common attempt and it is weaker, because senior in English reads as a courtesy, not as a rank. A reader cannot tell from senior alone whether the character outranks the master.
The reason to insist on the distinction is that plots depend on it. A novel with three elder tiers is sorting its characters every time it names one, and a translation that prints elder three times has deleted the sorting.
How the council is staged
The introduction is a signal. When a novel brings in a grand elder, it is telling the reader that internal politics are about to become the plot, because the office outranks the person the story has been following.
The council scene is the genre's parliament. Several elders, a grand elder chairing, and a decision that the sect master has to live with. The prose gives the grand elder the last word by convention.
Conflict with a grand elder is unwinnable by force. The character who beats one has usually left the sect, broken a rule, or found something the council cannot touch, and the genre is consistent that the office is defended by the institution, not by a duel.
What readers confuse it with
- Elder
- The base term and the tier below. Every grand elder is an elder; the office is the chair at the head of the table.
- Sect Master
- The office the council checks. The master commands; the council consents, and the grand elder is whoever runs the consent.
- Founding Ancestor
- The tier above, in seclusion. A supreme elder rules by veto and a founding ancestor intervenes once, and the difference is how often each appears.
Common questions
What is a Grand Elder?
The head of a sect's council of elders. The office outranks an ordinary elder and is usually held by the strongest cultivator outside seclusion.
Is a grand elder above the sect master?
On most questions of policy, yes, which is the point of the institution. The master commands and the council consents, and the grand elder chairs the council.
Why not translate all three as elder?
Because the tier is information. A novel with three elder ranks is sorting its characters every time it names one, and elder three times deletes the sorting.
Who is above a grand elder?
The supreme elders, who hold a veto without duties, and above them the ancestors in seclusion. Those appear only when the sect is about to be destroyed.
