Demonic Beast (妖兽)
A demonic beast is a non-human creature that absorbs qi and takes on power from it. The category is broad, and the animal you can bond with belongs to it too.

What makes one dangerous
They cultivate, which means they scale. Grade runs opposite ways across books: in some the first grade is a large dangerous animal and the ninth a natural disaster, in others the top grade carries the lowest numeral. Check the novel before assuming.
Inside them is a core. The beast core is the reason hunting is profitable: it is an alchemy material, a fuel source, and a cultivation aid. Most sect economies are built on beast cores the way real economies are built on ore.
They also have territories and, at higher grades, organisation. A beast tide is the genre's standard siege event: thousands of them driven out of the wilderness by something worse.
Why demonic is a poor translation that everyone uses
The Chinese term carries no Christian devil. It names a non-human thing that has gained power, usually by cultivating: a fox, a snake, a tree. The English demonic arrives with a theology the original lacks. The alternatives are not better.
Monster beast is more accurate and reads as redundant. Spirit beast is already taken by the bondable category. Translators keep demonic because the fandom recognises it, and gloss it once for new readers as a qi-cultivating animal, not a creature from hell.
If a novel distinguishes the demon race from the demonic beast, the race is usually translated as demon or yaoguai and the animal as demonic beast. Keeping those two apart is one of the harder jobs in translating this genre.
How it behaves in a scene
The hunt is a standard sect mission. Low reward, high survival rate, and a chance for the protagonist to show competence without threatening the plot. Most books put one in the first ten chapters.
In a fight, demonic beasts are written as physical. No techniques, no strategy, just mass and instinct. This is why they are a different kind of threat from a cultivator. The genre uses them when it wants violence without politics.
A beast tide is the escalation button. Cities fall, sects mobilise, and the protagonist gets a stage. It is also how authors write a war without inventing a political cause.
What readers confuse it with
- Spirit Beast 灵兽
- The bondable category. Both cultivate; the difference is whether a human can partner with one. A demonic beast that bonds is a plot development, not a rule.
- Demonic Cultivator 魔修
- A human practising forbidden methods. Sharing the English word demonic makes these two collide constantly, which is a good reason to gloss both once.
- Ancient Beast 上古神兽
- Mythic individuals far above the ladder. A demonic beast is a category with grades; an ancient beast is a specific legendary creature, usually sealed somewhere.
Common questions
What is a demonic beast?
An animal that absorbs qi and advances through cultivation grades, becoming larger, stronger and more intelligent. Unlike spirit beasts, they are not normally bondable and are usually hostile. Hunting them for their cores is the main economic activity of most sects.
What are the grades of demonic beasts?
Usually nine, mapped onto the human realm ladder, so a grade can stand in for a realm and let the reader predict a fight. Which end is deadly varies by book. The mapping is the constant, not the direction.
What is a beast core?
The beast core, the condensed qi inside a demonic beast, formed the way a cultivator forms a golden core. It is the main reason beasts are hunted: cores are used in alchemy, in forging, and as cultivation aids. A high-grade core can be worth more than a small sect's annual income.
What is a beast tide?
A mass migration or attack by demonic beasts, usually driven out of the wilderness by something stronger or by a change in the environment. It is the genre's standard siege event: cities fall, sects mobilise, and the protagonist gets a stage to prove themselves on.
A note from the translation desk
Translators diverge on whether to keep the demonic in the name at all. Dropping it flattens fights, because a demonic beast is what lives outside the sect walls and eats people who forget that the world is not safe.
