Breath Work (吐纳)

Cultivation Actions · section 01

Breath Work is drawing qi in with the breath and letting the spent breath out. It is the first technique in the genre, and what a cultivator does before anything else. The name is short for an older four-character formula.

What Breath Work is

The compound is 吐, to spit out, and 纳, to take in. It shortens a formula in the Zhuangzi, which describes adepts expelling the stale and drawing in the new, like a bear climbing and a bird stretching. The old text describes longevity exercises, not a ladder.

In the fiction it is the foundation of everything above it. Circulation, gathering and condensation all assume qi has already entered through the breath, which is why it is taught first. The assumption is the genre's.

It is the first measurable step. A mortal who begins breath work can feel qi, and that feeling is the standard signal of entry into the cultivation world.

Why the genre starts every chapter with it

Breath Work is the standard translation, and some versions use breathing exercise or respiration technique. The English is vague about direction, while the Chinese names two motions and puts the out-breath first.

It is not the same as meditation, which is the posture and the stillness. Breath work is the mechanism and sitting meditation is the container it happens in, and the genre separates the two.

The term is easy to confuse with regulating breathing, a recovery technique used after a fight. One draws qi in, the other settles what is already there. The verbs differ as much as the purposes.

How it is written on the page

It opens the cultivation sequence. A chapter that begins with a character sitting down and breathing begins with this, and the image is shorthand for time spent improving.

It is the cheapest training montage. The technique requires nothing but a quiet place, so the genre can advance a character without spending resources. Hence the default of early arcs.

It is the measure of talent. How fast someone draws qi with the breath is the first test of a spirit root, and the rate is the earliest signal of aptitude available.

Characters used above

The prose on this page names these in English. Here they are written out, in the order they came up.

吐纳Controlled breathing used to draw qi in and push impurities out

What readers confuse it with

Sitting Meditation
The posture the technique is performed in. Where this is the mechanism, that is the container, and the two are taught together.
Draw Qi In 引气入体
The technique that comes next. Breath work draws in; circulation moves what was drawn.
Spirit Root
What determines the rate. The technique is universal; the speed is not, and the root is what makes the difference.

Common questions

Is breath work a real practice?

Yes, and an old one. Expelling the stale and drawing in the new appears in the Zhuangzi as a description of longevity exercises, and breathing methods are documented in Daoist practice.

Can anyone learn it?

In most systems yes, but how fast it works depends on the spirit root. Everyone can breathe in the right order; what differs is how much arrives.

What is the difference between this and meditation?

Breath work is what you do with the breath; meditation is the state you sit in to do it. The genre shows both at once and calls the pair closed-door cultivation.

Why does every cultivation chapter start with it?

Because it is the universal first step and the cheapest way to show time. Any character at any level can do it, and the image says time is passing and power is accumulating.
