Who is Xu Yang's master?
Xu Yang's master is Jue Tiantong, the man who founded the core lineage of the Tianlan Sect and ascended before the story begins. He gave Xu Yang the sect's founding doctrine and forged his life-bound guardian sword from void meteor iron. He is gone for the entire series, which makes him the genre's most common kind of master: an absence with a name.
First, the name, because half the internet has it wrong
Jue Tiantong is the answer. Not Qingming Daoren. Qingming Daoren belongs to Qi Refining for 3000 Years, and the man who taught him is in a different sect in a different book with a different protagonist. If you came here from a search result that gave you Qingming Daoren, that page has merged two novels.
Jue Tiantong founded the core lineage of the Tianlan Sect. He ascended. That happened tens of thousands of years before the first episode. The 3D series began in 2023, on Tencent Video and WeTV, and has passed 360 episodes at 10 to 12 minutes each, and 0 of those minutes belong to the master. He does not come back to explain himself, because in this genre ascension is not a move, it is an exit.
What he left behind is the entire shape of Xu Yang's life.
What a master who ascends actually leaves
In most cultivation novels, a master is a teacher who appears in person: he lectures, he tests, he dies or turns out to be alive and now evil. Jue Tiantong is none of those. He is a doctrine and a sword.
The doctrine is the sect's founding principle, the thing the Tianlan Sect is supposed to believe about how a cultivator conducts himself. Xu Yang carries it the way a son carries a father's opinion of him, which is the emotional load the series actually uses. He has had roughly 100,000 years to disagree with it and 0 recorded instances of doing so.
The sword is more literal. Jue Tiantong forged Xu Yang's life-bound guardian sword from void meteor iron, and the weapon has a name in the story that says what it is for: guarding the path. A disciple who is handed a defensive artifact by an ascended master has been told something. It is not "become powerful." It is "hold."
Note how well that fits the premise. Xu Yang is stuck at Qi Refining layer 9999 and has been for 100,000 years. In most systems this stage has nine layers. He is at layer 9,999, which is what a stuck man looks like when he has had 100,000 years to insist he is fine. A man who cannot advance is exactly the man you want guarding a thing that must not move.
The sword he made, the absence he left
A life-bound blade is not a gift you hand a student you expect to grow past you. It is a gift you hand someone you expect to hold a position.
Huo Bufan is a separate absence, and a louder one. He is Xu Yang's senior brother, and he successfully ascended tens of thousands of years ago. That sets the baseline the whole series runs on: everyone else in the early generation left, one way or another, and Xu Yang is the 1 who stayed. Not out of virtue. Out of a body that would not let him go.
Why the cast around him keeps multiplying
A protagonist who cannot level up has to generate plot some other way, and One Hundred Thousand Years of Qi Refining does it through people.
Ling Qingshu is the current sect master, at the middle stage of Foundation Establishment, and early in the story she is being pressured into a marriage by the Yunshan Sect. Foundation Establishment is the 2nd rung on the standard ladder. Her patriarch sits at the 1st, and can flatten everyone on the 2nd. The patriarch has to intervene on behalf of a woman who is nominally his superior in the sect's hierarchy. That inversion is the show's engine, and it comes straight out of the master's absence: Jue Tiantong left a lineage, not a constitution, and the lineage has spent 100,000 years drifting.
Then there is Jiang Lan, his companion, who is the other reason he has not turned into a relic. She treats him as a person. Ling Qingshu treats him as a foundation stone. Between the 2 of them, the series keeps him human enough to be funny.
The voice
Xu Yang is voiced by Yuan Mingzhe in the 3D series, which started in 2023 and is still running. It is worth mentioning because the performance is doing a specific job: the voice is calm in the way a very old man is calm, which is not the same as kind. When he says something polite to a sect elder who is being awful, the politeness lands as a threat, and that is not coming from the script alone.
Jue Tiantong does not get a voice in the same way, because he is not there. Everything you know about him comes through Xu Yang's tone when the master is mentioned, which is a clever way to build a character out of the way somebody else pronounces his name.
How he differs from the other Qi Refining master
The Qingming Sword Sect's founder in Qi Refining for 3000 Years is Qingming Daoren, and he also ascended. That is where the similarity ends. That novel serialised on Ciweimao from July 2018 to February 2019, ended at 668 chapters, and became a 16-episode anime in 2022.
Qingming Daoren's sect is small, personal, and centered on a single sword ancestor. The tone is comedy, the sword fights are short, and the emotional register stays close to farce. Jue Tiantong's sect is an institution with branches, protocols and rivals, and the story's tone is closer to a management drama with better swords.
Neither is better. They are two different answers to the same structural question: what do you do with a master who has already left? One book answers with a joke about a man nobody respects. The other answers with a patriarch who runs an organization the way his teacher might have wanted, and cannot tell whether that is loyalty or just habit.
The details people get wrong
He is talked about far more than he is shown, which is the point. His role is to have already left: the doctrine, the sect, and the sword are all that remain, and the series uses him the way a legacy uses a dead founder. Anything you see of him is memory, instruction, or someone else quoting him.
Jue Tiantong did, from void meteor iron, which is the kind of material that shows up in a story to say someone had access to things ordinary elders do not. It is Xu Yang's life-bound guardian sword, and it is the most direct piece of evidence that his master intended him to hold a line rather than simply cultivate quietly.
Huo Bufan is Xu Yang's senior brother, and he successfully ascended tens of thousands of years ago. That matters because it sets the baseline: everyone else in the early generation left, one way or another. Xu Yang is the one who stayed, which is not a sign of virtue but of a body that would not let him leave.
What he actually passes down, in one scene
The clearest way to see Jue Tiantong's role is not a flashback.
It is an exchange with a sect elder who is being insufferable about procedure. Xu Yang does not threaten him. He does not display power. He is a patriarch who has held the sect's founding doctrine for 100,000 years, arguing with a man whose family arrived a few generations ago. He says something that sounds like the founding doctrine, patiently, and the elder understands that he has just been told the difference between the sect as it is and the sect as it was founded.
There is no sword drawn. There is no golden light. It is an old man quoting his teacher, and it works, because the teacher's authority is the only thing in the room that has never been challenged.
That is what a master who ascended leaves behind. Not a technique. A line nobody is willing to cross.
