What are the 9 stages of cultivation?

Power system1321 words

The nine stages are a Daoist internal alchemy sequence: gather the medicine, refine the essence, build the foundation, form the core, birth the soul, sever the spirit, refine the void, integrate the body, then face the tribulation. Novels kept the order and dropped the meditation, turning nine meditation stages into nine power levels.

Nine was a meditation schedule before it was a power ranking

The number is older than the genre. Daoist internal alchemy described a single lifetime of work in nine movements, and the movements were things a body does, not ranks a person holds: gather the ingredients, refine them, build a container, condense a core, birth a second self, temper it, empty it out, put it back together, and then face the last test.

None of those stages were competitive. They were sequential and internal, and the point of finishing them was to stop being subject to decay, not to win fights.

Xianxia borrowed the sequence wholesale and changed exactly 1 thing: it added other people. Once two cultivators can be compared, a meditation schedule becomes a ladder, and a ladder becomes a social order with admissions tests.

The nine stages, in the order they actually go

Here is the list with the alchemical meaning and the novel version side by side, nine rows, and the gap between the two columns is the genre.

#Term (Chinese)What the alchemy manual meantWhat the novel means
1筑基Lay a foundation before anything is storedYou are finally strong enough to survive the tutorial
2练气Refine breath into something usableYou can hold qi; still killable by a knife
3结丹Condense the refined material into a single coreAgeing slows, sects treat you as an asset
4元婴A second self is born from the coreYou stop being killable by ordinary means
5化神Temper the spirit until it acts without the bodyYou stop appearing in ordinary scenes
6炼虚Refine toward emptiness rather than substanceYou draw on the world instead of your own store
7合体Body and spirit become one thingDamage to either is no longer separate
8大乘The completed vehicle, ready to leaveThe last human stage, and a warning to everyone below
9渡劫The final trial, which kills most who reach itA verdict rather than a level: pass and the book ends

Note the trap in rows 1 and 2. The classical order builds the foundation first and refines breath second, because a container has to exist before it holds anything. Most novels flip them, which is why Qi Refining is stage 1 in nearly every chart you will find. The flip is a convenience. A protagonist who starts by doing something is easier to write than one who starts by preparing, and readers will accept a wrong order long before they accept a hero who does nothing for six chapters.

Why the bottom of the ladder is where books cheat

The first two stages do the least narrative work and take the most chapters, so authors compress them.

Compression takes 3 common forms. Some books merge them, so a character refines qi and lays the foundation in the same arc. Some books split Qi Refining into 9 or 13 layers, which turns 1 stage into a miniature ladder with its own inner politics. Some books put an unpowered body-tempering stage underneath everything, so that the hero can be a physical wreck at chapter 1 and still be worth reading.

The glossary keeps a separate list for the body path, and it is not a metaphor: skin, then tendon, then organs, then marrow, then a frame that will not break. Body refiners spend the first 100 chapters being laughed at by people who have already formed a core, and the laughter stops in the chapter where the frame holds.

What the middle stages are actually for

Stages 3 to 5 are the load-bearing part of the system, and each 1 exists to solve a specific writing problem.

Core Formation solves mortality. The moment a character has a core, the clock slows to a standard 500 years, and the story can skip decades without killing its cast. It also converts the character into property: a sect that owns a core-forming disciple owns an appreciating asset.

Nascent Soul solves expendability. A soul that can leave the body cannot be killed by destroying the body, which means the author can stage a total defeat and still keep the character, and the lifespan goes to 1,000 at a stroke. It is the most useful stage in the genre, which is why so many books end just above it.

The stage after the soul solves scale. A character who can act on the world without a body no longer needs to be in the room, and the story can have consequences in four provinces at once.

Why the ninth stage reads differently from the other eight

Every stage before the 9th can be failed and retried. Losing a stage, cracking the base under it, botching a breakthrough: all of it is recoverable, given a pill and an arc. The genre is generous with second chances precisely because it has so many stages to spend them on.

The 9th is not. Tribulation Transcendence is the stage where heaven answers, and the answer is usually lightning, in nine strikes or 81. Fail and the body may survive while the soul does not, which the glossary has a separate entry for, and calls worse than death.

That asymmetry is why the 9th stage is the one books are most likely to cut. A story that ends at Nascent Soul has an open future. A story that reaches the 9th has a deadline, and everything after it is either an epilogue or a sequel with a new ladder.

The version most readers actually meet

If you read 3 xianxia novels and 2 of them agree, the agreement is probably this: qi refining, a foundation, a core, a soul, then something with the word spirit or deity in it, then a top stage where the character stops being human.

Which means the nine stages are best treated as a shape rather than a list. A filter, a middle where you become politically real, an upper tier where the body stops mattering, and a top where heaven takes a swing. Any chart with nine rows is someone's attempt to fill in that shape, and the shape is the part that travels.

The awkward questions, answered straight

Because the number is cosmological, not practical. Nine is the largest single digit in Chinese reckoning, the number of heavens in the older cosmology, and the count of strokes in the classic ritual sequences. Nine stages mean completeness, so a system with nine rungs reads as finished and a system with ten reads as a different tradition entirely.

No. The middle three are stable because they are visually useful: a core you can see, a soul that can leave the body, a void you can draw on. The bottom two get merged or renamed constantly, and the top two are frequently cut so that the book can end at Nascent Soul.

Tribulation Transcendence, written 渡劫, literally crossing the calamity. It is a stage you fail rather than complete, and the failure mode is death rather than a setback, which is why it reads as a verdict instead of a level.

FAQ

Why are there nine stages instead of ten?

Because the number is cosmological, not practical. Nine is the largest single digit in Chinese reckoning, the number of heavens in the older cosmology, and the count of strokes in the classic ritual sequences. Nine stages mean completeness, so a system with nine rungs reads as finished and a system with ten reads as a different tradition entirely.

Are the 9 stages the same in every novel?

No. The middle three are stable because they are visually useful: a core you can see, a soul that can leave the body, a void you can draw on. The bottom two get merged or renamed constantly, and the top two are frequently cut so that the book can end at Nascent Soul.

What is the ninth stage called?

Tribulation Transcendence, written 渡劫, literally crossing the calamity. It is a stage you fail rather than complete, and the failure mode is death rather than a setback, which is why it reads as a verdict instead of a level.
